TotalEnergies Implements Emission Reduction Measures Offshore Angola

TotalEnergies is implementing measures to reduce emissions and improve reliability on its FPSOs in Block 17 offshore Angola. Key strategies include optimizing turbogenerator performance, enhancing energy efficiency with LED lighting, and introducing AI-assisted dynamic load shedding. These initiatives have already led to a reduction of 29,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions, with a further target of 51,000 mt, alongside projected savings in maintenance costs.

TotalEnergies has undertaken significant efforts to cut emissions from its floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessels in offshore Angola, particularly in Block 17. The main objective is to reduce fuel gas usage and lessen emissions associated with power generation on these vessels.

To support the necessary electricity for pumps, compressors, and other equipment on the platforms, multiple gas turbogenerators are deployed, often operating outside their ideal performance range. The management team is actively working on improving energy efficiency, notably through the installation of LED lighting and enhanced air filtration systems for the turbines.

In addition, the focus is also on ensuring the reliability of the turbogenerators by predicting potential failures and optimizing their operational numbers. This involves better power sharing between the Girassol and Dalia FPSOs by enhancing the functionality of the high-voltage power cable that connects the two vessels. Furthermore, there is an effort to adjust load sharing management on the Pazflor FPSO turbogenerators to boost their operational power.

An important aspect of the strategy includes revamping the current load shedding procedures at both power generation sites. Moreover, TotalEnergies is working on introducing AI-assisted dynamic load shedding systems which are expected to elevate operational efficiency.

By the end of last year, these various initiatives had already led to a reduction of approximately 29,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions, with an ambitious target to further decrease emissions by up to 51,000 metric tons within a year. Additional anticipated benefits from these measures could see a decrease in maintenance costs of around $13 million over a span of 20 years.

TotalEnergies is making substantial strides in emission reduction and power generation efficiency on its FPSOs in Angola. Through a combination of technological enhancements and efficient management practices, the company has already achieved significant CO2 reductions and is targeting even greater future gains in both environmental and economic aspects.
