Dangote Group and Niger State Collaborate to Boost Agriculture
The Dangote Group has partnered with the Niger State Government to invest billions into commercial agriculture, focusing on rice production. This collaboration includes the Niger Food initiative and a new rice mill in Wushishi, expected to enhance food security and create jobs. The project also features on-site power generation to reduce grid reliance. Governor Umar Bago supports the initiative, encouraging investment in the state.
In a significant move to enhance commercial agriculture in Nigeria, the Dangote Group has partnered with the Niger State Government, marking a multi-billion naira investment into the agricultural sector. Fatima Abdurrahman, the Senior Special Adviser to the President and Chief Executive of Dangote Group, made this announcement during the 2025 Niger National Trade Fair held in Minna. She emphasized the employment of substantial resources into rice production infrastructure within the state.
Abdurrahman highlighted the collaboration on the Niger Food initiative, a program established by the Niger State Government and designed to align private and public sector efforts in agricultural development. The initiative aims to enhance food security, generate employment, and stimulate local economies. “The Niger Food initiative is an agricultural development programme launched by the Niger State Government in partnership with private sector players like the Dangote Group,” she stated.
The attention was also directed towards Dangote’s advanced rice mill located in Wushishi, which is reported to be progressing well and is set to be among the largest of its kind in Niger State. She mentioned that this feat constitutes a major step in bolstering food security initiatives and fostering agricultural progress in the region. “Upon its delivery, the mill is expected to enhance local rice production, create employment opportunities, and contribute to the agricultural development of Nigeria,” remarked Abdurrahman.
The rice mill, with a capacity of 32 metric tons per hour, is built on a 30-hectare site and is designed with innovative rice milling technology, ensuring high efficiency and top-quality output. “Once operational, it will not only boost local rice production but also strengthen the entire agricultural value chain, from farm to market,” she added. This mill will source rice from local growers and provide them with essential farming inputs, thus supporting farmers’ livelihoods.
Moreover, the facility is set to include an on-site power generation system that will produce 5.8 megawatts of electricity, a strategic move to reduce dependency on the national power grid. Governor Umar Bago, represented by Aminu Takuma, the Commissioner for Trade, Investment, and Industry, applauded the partnership and underscored the state government’s commitment to fostering an environment conducive to business and investment.
In his comments, Governor Bago encouraged the Dangote Group to leverage the multiple investment opportunities present in Niger State. He also announced plans to elevate the Niger Trade Fair to an international level. Furthermore, Dr. Bisi Adeniyi, President of the Niger Chamber of Commerce, urged private sector players to capitalize on the vast agricultural land in Niger State, thus enhancing agricultural investments.
In summary, the partnership between the Dangote Group and Niger State Government marks a transformative step towards revolutionizing commercial agriculture in Nigeria. The ambitious investment in rice production and processing not only promises to enhance food security and create job opportunities, but also strengthens the agricultural sector overall. As both parties cultivate this venture, the aim remains clear: to establish Niger State as a hub for agricultural innovation and productivity.
