Bangladeshi Youth Fatally Shot by BSF Along Kasba Border

A 32-year-old Bangladeshi youth named Al-Amin was fatally shot by BSF personnel along the Kasba border in Brahmanbaria. Following his injuries from gunfire during an alleged smuggling incident, he succumbed while in BSF custody. A flag meeting between BGB and BSF is planned to address the incident and facilitate the return of his body to the family.

A Bangladeshi youth, identified as Al-Amin, aged 32, was shot and killed by the Border Security Force (BSF) of India in the Kasba border area of Brahmanbaria. The occurrence took place around 7:30 PM on a Friday evening when BSF personnel opened fire, reportedly using rubber bullets, at a group of individuals near the border. Al-Amin, a resident of Dakshin Putiya village in Bayek union, was taken into custody by the BSF after sustaining injuries and succumbed to his wounds while being treated at the BSF camp around 9:00 PM.

Billal Hossain, the chairman of the Bayek union parishad, has confirmed the incident; however, he stated that the motives behind the shooting remain uncertain. Due to the remote location of the victim’s family, there was no immediate contact made, and it has been noted that Dakshin Putiya is a region often associated with criminal activities, particularly smuggling. Al-Amin was reportedly involved in sugar smuggling activities.

Samiul Islam, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), conveyed that the BSF shot Al-Amin under the suspicion that he was engaged in smuggling. Post the shooting, the BSF provided medical treatment; unfortunately, he did not survive his injuries through that night. The UNO also stated that communication regarding the incident was established with the BSF through the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), leading to plans for a flag meeting.

A flag meeting between the BGB and BSF is scheduled for today, during which the body of Al-Amin is expected to be returned. Local residents recall that this incident is not isolated; two other youths had reportedly been shot dead in the bordering area on November 25 of the previous year, along with another incident on April 22.

The tragic shooting of Al-Amin, a 32-year-old Bangladeshi youth, underscores ongoing tensions along the Kasba border. Allegations of smuggling in the region contribute to these incidents, and the BSF’s actions raise questions regarding their engagement protocols. Efforts for resolution through discussions between the BGB and BSF are underway, emphasizing the necessity of addressing border security issues and protecting lives in the affected areas.
