During the vibrant Trinidad and Tobago Carnival celebrations, a tragic incident occurred when a shooting resulted in the death of one individual and injuries to four others. The victim, identified as Irvin Joaquin Mayora, a 30-year-old Venezuelan national, succumbed to his injuries after the shooting on Western Main Road in St. James. Among the injured were a 66-year-old man, a 25-year-old man, a 29-year-old woman, and a 65-year-old woman, including a US citizen.
The shooting transpired when a 61-year-old man from Carapichaima reported being approached and attacked by an assailant while walking. In self-defense, he drew his firearm and discharged it, inadvertently injuring four bystanders, including Mayora, who later collapsed from his wounds. After the incident, the shooter remained on-site, cooperating with security and law enforcement, leading to the seizure of his firearm.
Victims were promptly transported to St. James District Hospital for treatment. Of those injured, a 25-year-old man was later in serious condition after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head, while the others are reported to be in stable condition. The police seized eleven spent 9mm shells at the crime scene and began investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including whether Mayora was indeed the attacker.
This shooting occurred shortly after a public event intended to bolster community confidence in safety measures during carnival festivities, led by Minister of National Security Fitzgerald Hinds and acting Commissioner of Police Junior Benjamin. They had previously commended the police and residents for ensuring a secure carnival thus far, amidst a State of Emergency that has been in effect since December 29, 2024. Although there is no curfew currently enforced, police are prepared to provide updates regarding the situation.
The Carnival celebrations in Trinidad and Tobago were overshadowed by a tragic shooting incident that resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, highlighting ongoing concerns about safety. As investigations continue, the authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant. These events stress the need for effective security measures and community awareness amidst festivities, especially during a State of Emergency. Moving forward, the police efforts and community cooperation will be crucial to address safety during public events and prevent further incidents.
