Although Mozambique’s top court upheld Frelimo’s election victory, discrepancies arose regarding the vote counts; while the Constitutional Council recorded a 65% majority for Chapo, the electoral commission had originally announced over 70%. The Frelimo party has maintained power since Mozambique’s independence from Portugal in 1975.

Western observers, such as the European Union, condemned the election for lack of fairness, urging electoral bodies to ensure transparency throughout the counting process. Reports from international human rights organizations indicate that over 100 individuals have died due to security force actions since the onset of protests in October, with local organizations like Plataforma Decide estimating casualties to exceed 300.
