Darlington College Students Acquire Thai Culinary Skills on Transformational Trip

Darlington College culinary students experienced a 15-day trip in Thailand, funded by the Turing Scheme, to enhance their culinary skills. Their journey culminated in a buffet event showcasing Thai cuisine, fostering aspirations for careers abroad among students. The trip underscored cultural exchange and personal growth, with students eager to share their new skills.

Darlington College students embarked on an inspiring culinary journey in Thailand, where they refined their culinary skills over a 15-day trip in Bangkok. Eighteen students from Level 2 and 3, accompanied by three staff members, gained insights into Thai cuisine thanks to funding from the Department for Education’s Turing Scheme, aimed at enhancing students’ practical abilities and global perspectives.

The culinary students attended Suan Dusit University, where they received a certificate as part of the London-Bangkok World City Links initiative focused on traditional Thai cuisine. Tina Snowball, a mature student and learning support worker at the college, expressed her desire to retire in Thailand, emphasizing the warm hospitality of the local people and the vibrant, multicultural atmosphere of the country, stating, “It was brilliant, incredible and I am thinking of retiring there.”

Seventeen-year-old Alisha Goddard from Catterick Garrison echoed similar sentiments, sharing her amazement at the stark contrasts with the UK and her aspirations to work overseas, potentially on cruise ships, as a result of her experiences. Darlington College lecturer Dawn Cobb lauded the event, remarking, “The trip was absolutely incredible and our students threw themselves into the Thai food culture with such enthusiasm.”

The students will showcase their culinary experiences during an Asian-themed buffet scheduled for March 11 at the college’s Glasshouse Restaurant, beginning at 6:30 PM.
