In a tragic incident in the Anguwan-Kaje area of Minna, Niger state, a police officer, who is yet to be identified, allegedly shot and killed a businessman named Sani Khalid. Reports suggest that Mr. Khalid, a footballer, was resting outside his home on a warm night when officer(s) from a nearby beer parlor opened fire, leading to his death, while others narrowly avoided injury.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that Sani was sleeping outside with a tea seller when the police officer discharged his weapon without provocation. “Sani was killed by police officers last night under disturbing circumstances. He was sleeping outside when the police shot him without any provocation or offence,” stated an anonymous resident. It is reported that another shot was aimed at the tea seller but thankfully, he escaped unharmed.

Following the incident, bystanders found Sani already deceased at the scene. Investigating residents discovered that the involved officers appeared intoxicated, as a bullet and an empty bottle of Gulder beer were found nearby. The Niger state police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the shooting, citing that a directive for investigation had been issued by the Commissioner of Police, Shawulu Ebenezer Dammam.

According to SP Abiodun, the incident occurred around 3 AM on March 10, 2025, and he assured that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Maitumbi has been tasked with identifying the responsible officers. He confirmed, “The police command received the complaint of the alleged shooting this morning. The Commissioner of Police has directed the DPO of Maitumbi to investigate and identify the officers allegedly responsible for this heinous act for further necessary action.”
