Tragic Impact of Bolivia’s Rainy Season: 40 Dead and Thousands Displaced
Bolivia’s rainy season has resulted in 40 deaths and 7 missing persons since November. Authorities report extensive damage, with 163,193 families displaced and over 80 homes destroyed due to landslides, particularly in La Paz. 37 municipalities have declared a disaster state due to the heavy impact of rainfall.
The annual rainy season in Bolivia, commencing in November, has led to severe flooding and landslides, resulting in 40 fatalities and seven individuals reported missing, as communicated by the authorities on March 11. The Deputy Minister of Civil Defence, Juan Carlos Calvimontes, indicated a potential increase in death counts following a landslide that affected approximately 80 homes in La Paz early that day.
In response to the crisis, officials have mandated the complete evacuation of affected areas to mitigate further fatalities. Residents have been strongly advised against entering regions that remain at high risk for additional landslides. Currently, as per the latest civil defense assessment, 163,193 families have been displaced or rendered homeless, predominantly within the La Paz department.
The incessant rains since November have impacted 105 municipalities, with 37 of these municipalities officially declaring a state of disaster due to the adverse conditions.
