Investigation Launched After Drunken Policeman Kills Resident in Niger State

Commissioner of Police Shuwala Danmamman instructed the Divisional Police Officer of Maitumbi to locate and apprehend the officer involved in this grave incident that occurred in the early hours of Monday.

The police officer, stationed at the Maitumbi Police Station, is reported to have consumed large quantities of alcohol prior to the shooting spree. He discharged his firearm indiscriminately, claiming the life of a resident, identified only as Sani, in the Angwan-Kaje area of Chanchaga Local Government Area.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the officer not only shot Sani while he was sleeping but also attempted to shoot a local tea seller known as Mai Shayi, who narrowly escaped the attack. An eyewitness described, “The officer shot Sani while he was sleeping. He also attempted to shoot Mai Shayi, but he ran away. Bullet shells were found at the scene.”

Niger State Police Command spokesman, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident and emphasized the Commissioner’s commitment to a thorough investigation. He stated, “The command received the complaint of the alleged shooting, which occurred around 3 am on March 10, 2025, at Angwan-Kaje, Maitumbi, Minna.” Abiodun reiterated that the DPO of Maitumbi has been tasked with identifying the responsible officer, ensuring that justice will be served, and that updates will be shared with the public as they arise.
