David Gikungu, the Director General of the Kenya Meteorological Department, has recently clarified the status of Kenya’s long rains. According to Gikungu, despite the recent rainfall, the long rains have not yet officially commenced. During an interview on Citizen TV, he mentioned that the showers witnessed since last Saturday represent merely a prelude. The true onset of the long rains is anticipated in the last week of March or early April.

While current rains are expected to moderate by mid-week, certain regions, particularly western Kenya, may still receive moderate showers. Residents in these areas are encouraged to remain vigilant regarding weather updates. Gikungu further advised farmers to postpone planting until early April when the long rains are fully underway, as this timing will likely enhance crop growth.

The recent precipitation, which began on March 8, is projected to last until Wednesday, with some lighter drizzles expected through the weekend. The meteorological department’s weekly projections indicate that eight regions—including the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the Coastal Region—are likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall. Areas such as Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, and Nyeri should begin to see rain around March 12.

It is important to note that, despite the onset of rain, temperatures remain unseasonably high, with many regions exceeding 30°C. Additionally, strong southeasterly winds are impacting northwestern and northeastern Kenya, with speeds surpassing 25 knots.
