SMA Altenso Achieves Gigawatt Milestone in Hydrogen Technology with Namibia Project

The completion and installation of SMA inverter technology for Cleanergy Solutions Namibia’s hydrogen project mark a substantial achievement, as Altenso surpasses the 1 gigawatt (GW) milestone in hydrogen applications. This project integrates photovoltaics, battery storage, and hydrogen production, underscoring Altenso’s prominent position in sustainable energy solutions.
Dr. Jens Eiko Birkholz, Head of Sales & Business Development at Altenso, remarked on the company’s achievement, noting their successful execution of over 80 hydrogen projects that predominantly focus on generating green hydrogen through photovoltaic and wind energy sources. His comments highlighted Altenso’s deep technological expertise and adept international project management, which are essential for managing intricate projects, including those offshore. These initiatives facilitate the annual production of approximately 130,000 tons of green hydrogen, playing a crucial role in decarbonizing industrial operations.
SMA CEO Jürgen Reinert stressed the necessity of stable grid integration and load control within the developing hydrogen and renewable energy landscape. He pointed out that SMA’s innovative technologies, coupled with Altenso’s project management capabilities, are pivotal in enhancing renewable energy integration and shaping the future energy landscape.
At the Namibia project located on the Atlantic coast, Altenso is driving the system integration of a battery storage system (BESS) and offering power-to-gas (P2G) solutions for hydrogen production. The installation of the PV farm and battery inverter technology is anticipated to conclude by the end of 2024, with hydrogen production slated for mid-2025. SMA’s rectifier solution, employing IGBT technology, ensures compatibility with diverse electrolyzers and strengthens grid stability through integrated services, such as fault ride-through and reactive power support.
Furthermore, Altenso has developed an advanced energy management system (EMS), specifically for projects of this nature, aimed at optimizing sustainable hydrogen production by leveraging photovoltaic forecasts and dynamic demand profiles.
