Ghana Government Allocates GH¢492.5 Million for Disaster Relief

Specifically, GH¢200 million is dedicated to support individuals impacted by the tidal wave that displaced residents in Agavedzi and neighboring areas of the Ketu South Constituency. This funding was announced by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minister of Finance, during the presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement in Parliament.

Furthermore, GH¢292.5 million has been designated to assist those affected by the spillage from the Akosombo Dam. Reports indicated that this disaster rendered over 300 individuals homeless, destroyed 50 homes, and devastated approximately 80 kilometers of coastline. In response, President John Mahama visited the impacted Ketu South region, committing to the initiation of a sea defense project designed to safeguard vulnerable coastal areas.

According to a UNICEF report, the Akosombo Dam spillage has displaced around 35,857 individuals, including numerous children. In 2023, the Volta River Authority managed water release from the Akosombo Dam to mitigate risks of overflow, necessitated by the rising levels of the Volta River and significant water inflow that inundated at-risk, low-lying communities. The North and Central Tongu districts have been identified as the areas experiencing the most severe impacts from the flooding.
