Cyclone Jude Causes Devastation in Northern Mozambique
Cyclone Jude has caused at least six deaths and destroyed over 900 homes in northern Mozambique. The cyclone, which struck on Monday, produced winds of up to 195 kilometers per hour and heavy rainfall. This event marks the third cyclone to hit the country within four months, underlining ongoing vulnerabilities to severe weather in the region.
In northern Mozambique, Cyclone Jude has resulted in the tragic loss of at least six lives and the destruction of over 900 homes, as reported by local authorities. The storm, which made landfall on Monday, unleashed winds reaching up to 195 kilometers per hour and deposited more than 250 millimeters (10 inches) of rain within a 24-hour period, according to the National Institute of Meteorology.
This cyclone marks the third such event to impact impoverished Mozambique in a span of four months. In addition to the fatalities, the National Institute for Risk and Disaster Management noted that at least 20 individuals sustained injuries, with around 9,500 people affected by the storm’s destruction.
While Cyclone Jude has since weakened to a tropical storm, it continues to produce heavy rainfall, strong winds, and thunderstorms across the region. This follows the severe impacts of previous cyclones, including Cyclone Chido, which hit in December and resulted in at least 120 deaths and the destruction of nearly 120,000 homes, and Cyclone Dikeledi in mid-January, which claimed five lives and damaged almost 3,500 homes.
Cyclone Jude has inflicted significant damage on northern Mozambique, claiming lives and destroying homes, against a backdrop of previous severe cyclones in the region. The ongoing impact of these storms highlights the pressing need for disaster preparedness and recovery efforts in vulnerable areas such as Mozambique.
