Kenya Meteorological Department Issues Rain Warning for Upcoming Weekend
The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains from March 14 to 17, impacting several counties including Nyandarua, Laikipia, and Nairobi. Cold night temperatures of 5°C are anticipated in Highland East counties, while high daytime temperatures of up to 35°C are expected in other regions. Residents are urged to prepare for varying weather conditions across the country.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning for moderate to heavy rainfall expected across various regions in Kenya from Friday, March 14 to Tuesday, March 17. The official advisory, released on Thursday, March 13, highlighted that the Highland East counties, which include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi, would experience moderate rainfall initially, followed by heavy downpours in the latter part of the forecast period.
Additionally, heavy rains are also expected in the Highland West and Lake Victoria basin counties, covering Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo-Marakwet starting Saturday, March 15. Other counties likely to receive significant rainfall include Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
Residents in Southeastern counties such as Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, along with inland areas of Tana River, are also advised to prepare for heavy rainfall beginning Saturday afternoon and expected to continue for three days until Tuesday, March 17.
While Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and coastal sections of Tana River County are forecasted to experience rainfall, the amounts are anticipated to be minimal. As the rainy season commences, the meteorological department has alerted residents, particularly in the Highland East counties, about very cold night temperatures, expected to drop to 5°C.
In contrast, daytime temperatures are projected to be significantly higher in counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, and Bomet, where temperatures may reach as high as 35°C. Other regions, including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, are also anticipated to experience elevated daytime temperatures.
The upcoming weekend weather forecast from the Kenya Meteorological Department indicates widespread moderate to heavy rainfall across many counties, particularly in the Highland East and West regions, highlighting the need for residents to prepare adequately. Moreover, temperature variations are expected, with very cold nights in some areas and notably high daytime heat in others, emphasizing the importance of staying informed about changing weather conditions.
