Bangladeshi Expat Kamrul Islam Killed in South Africa Robbery Incident
Kamrul Islam, a Bangladeshi businessman, was tragically shot dead by armed robbers in South Africa. The incident occurred in Vepener while he was closing his shop. His family is working on arrangements for his return to Bangladesh and is seeking assistance from the government.
A tragic incident occurred in South Africa on Thursday night, resulting in the death of a Bangladeshi businessman named Kamrul Islam, aged 33. The attack happened around 9 PM in Vepener, a town located in the Free State Province. Kamrul, son of the late Abdul Mannan Miah, hailed from Karmullahpur village in Yakubpur Union, Feni district, Bangladesh.
According to his elder brother, Kamruzzaman, Kamrul had been living in South Africa for the past 12 years. He initially worked there before establishing his own business and had plans to return to Bangladesh in the near future. On the night of the incident, two armed robbers entered Kamrul’s shop just as he was closing for the evening.
The assailants, described by witnesses as Black men, not only looted cash and valuables from the store but also forced Kamrul outside, presuming he had additional money in his vehicle. Tragically, they shot him in the left side of his chest, causing immediate death. Efforts are now in place to retrieve his body and return it to Bangladesh, with the family seeking governmental assistance.
Daganbhuiyan Upazila Nirbahi Officer SM Azharul Islam has acknowledged the situation and mentioned that communication is underway with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to address the matter appropriately. The family is currently in contact with relatives in South Africa to manage the aftermath of this unfortunate incident.
The demise of Kamrul Islam underscores the grave risks faced by expatriates in certain regions. The incident highlights the necessity for protective measures and support from both local and governmental authorities. Efforts are being made to facilitate the repatriation of his remains to Bangladesh, demonstrating the importance of familial and governmental cooperation in addressing such tragedies.
