According to sources, the legal challenge arose after Fashanu reached an agreement with foreign investors for over £500,000 concerning a 22-acre property. Upon discovering that construction work had commenced without his consent, Fashanu and his lawyer were detained while attempting to resolve the matter at the police station.

Fashanu’s case was recently brought before Abuja’s Federal High Court; however, the hearing was deferred to April 10, allowing relevant parties to file their counter affidavits. His legal representative, Chinyere Chigbu, confirmed the court’s decision.

The 62-year-old ex-footballer vehemently denies any wrongdoing and asserts that both he and his wife, Vivian, alongside his lawyer, suffered wrongful detention. Fashanu has also expressed that this incident has caused him significant emotional distress, hampering his ambition to secure a coaching role with the Super Eagles.

Fashanu, who boasts a mixed heritage, was born in England to a Nigerian father and a British Guiana mother but opted to represent England internationally. He had limited appearances for the national team during his playing career, primarily conducted in various clubs across England before retiring in 1995 and transitioning into media work.
