Mozambique Police Arrest Officers in Connection with Kidnapping and Murder
In Mozambique, police arrested seven suspects, including two officers, for the kidnapping and murder of a 36-year-old Indian businessman. The victim was abducted on March 3, and the kidnappers demanded a ransom while ultimately murdering him. The investigation led to the discovery of the body and multiple arrests, revealing police complicity in the crime.
The Mozambican police have arrested seven individuals, including two police officers, in connection with the kidnapping and murder of an Indian businessman in Chokwe. Zaqueu Mucambe, spokesperson for the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) in Gaza province, confirmed the arrests. The businessman, aged 36, was abducted on March 3rd by four armed men after closing his shop on Eduardo Mondlane Avenue.
Following the kidnapping, the assailants demanded a ransom of two million meticais (approximately $31,000) from the victim’s family. Shortly after making this demand, the kidnappers murdered the businessman, whose body was later discovered in a shallow grave in Chivongoene, Guijá. The investigation led to the arrest of three suspects at their homes, with details of their actions resulting in the identification of the burial site.
In total, seven suspects have been arrested, which includes the two police officers as well as several business individuals and mechanics. Mucambe described the officers’ actions as motivated by “measureless ambition.” All suspects, aged between 32 and 45, have denied their involvement in the crime, with one particularly stating that he sells flip-flops and is unaware of the alleged crimes. Authorities have recovered firearms, counterfeit documents, and vehicles associated with the kidnapping.
The recent arrests in Mozambique highlight a disturbing trend of police involvement in criminal activities, notably in the kidnapping and murder of an Indian businessman. The escalation of violence, coupled with the demands for ransom, underscores the challenges the local authorities face in maintaining law and order. The ongoing investigation will likely provide further insights into the motives and operational methods of the individuals involved.
