Eddie Jordan, a former Formula 1 team owner and prominent media personality, has passed away at the age of 76, as confirmed by his family through a statement. Widely recognized as “EJ,” he founded the Jordan team, which competed in Formula 1 during the 1990s and 2000s. He remained a beloved figure in motorsport due to his humor, strong opinions, and eye-catching fashion sense, especially after selling the team in 2005.
Jordan had been undergoing treatment for aggressive bladder and prostate cancer that metastasized to his spine and pelvis. His family announced that he passed away peacefully in Cape Town, with loved ones present. They expressed, “EJ brought an abundance of charisma, energy and Irish charm everywhere he went. We all have a huge hole missing without his presence.”
F1 president Stefano Domenicali remarked on Jordan’s significant impact, stating he was a key figure during a crucial era in Formula 1 and his vibrant spirit would be greatly missed. Jordan first entered F1 in 1991, where he notably gave Michael Schumacher his inaugural race opportunity following the imprisonment of another driver.
Flavio Briatore, former manager of Benetton, expressed his sadness over Jordan’s loss, recalling fond memories and noting the void his absence would create in the F1 paddock. Notable drivers such as Damon Hill, Rubens Barrichello, and Heinz-Harald Frentzen raced for Jordan throughout his tenure, with Jordan Grand Prix achieving four wins before its sale.
Andy Cowell, team principal of Aston Martin, honored Jordan, stating he was a unique and charismatic leader who significantly contributed to motorsport history. Jordan also managed renowned car designer Adrian Newey at his transition to Aston Martin in 2024. Notably, upon revealing his cancer diagnosis, Jordan urged listeners to prioritize their health and seek medical advice: “Go and get tested, because in life you have got chances. Don’t be stupid. Don’t be shy. Look after your body, guys.”
Eddie Jordan’s death marks the loss of a charismatic and influential figure in Formula 1 and motorsport. Known for his vibrant personality and contributions to the sport, his legacy endures through the memories he created, the drivers he nurtured, and the team he founded. His advocacy for health awareness reminds us of the importance of taking care of oneself. Jordan’s impact on the motorsport community will be remembered fondly by many.
