Police Arrest Suspected Gang Preying on Uber Drivers in Githunguri
Police in Githunguri arrested two individuals associated with a gang that has targeted Uber drivers in violent attacks. Police in Githunguri, Kiambu County, have successfully apprehended two suspects linked to a criminal gang targeting Uber drivers through violent means and vehicle destruction. The arrests took place early Thursday morning during a routine patrol along the Githunguri-Kiambu Road.
According to a police report from the Githunguri Police Station, the officers intercepted a suspicious Uber vehicle—a Toyota Passo—near Gathanji shopping center, approximately seven kilometers from the police station. The driver, Antony Kimemia Wanyeki, age 34, had picked up the suspects who requested a ride from Kiambu Posta to Jamaica area.
Upon searching the vehicle and its occupants, officers uncovered an array of tools typically associated with vehicle vandalism and potential assaults. Among the items found were an improvised strangulation tool, a sisal rope, pliers, screwdrivers, various spanners, and a navy blue knit cap intended for disguise.
The second suspect was found in possession of two national ID cards, a Tecno Spark 8 smartphone used to hail the ride, and a spanner. Authorities suspect that the gang has been masquerading as authentic Uber customers before engaging in violent attacks against drivers, primarily on remote roads in Kiambu County.
As stated in the police report, “The suspects are part of a gang that has been luring unsuspecting Uber drivers before launching attacks and damaging their vehicles.” Investigations are ongoing, and both suspects are presently in custody. They will soon be presented to identify potential links to other similar attacks on Uber drivers.
