Witkoff Expresses Optimism for Ukraine Peace Talks, Downplays Putin’s Ambitions
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff expressed optimism for peace negotiations in Saudi Arabia regarding the Ukraine war, stating that Russian President Putin seemingly “wants peace.” Witkoff noted that a ceasefire in the Black Sea could lead to broader cessation of hostilities despite EU concerns over potential Russian ambitions. The upcoming talks on March 24 entail Ukrainian meetings with American officials, viewed as a bilateral discussion, not direct negotiations with Russia.
United States Special Envoy Steve Witkoff conveyed a sense of optimism regarding upcoming negotiations in Saudi Arabia focused on resolving the Ukraine conflict. He suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin ostensibly “wants peace,” according to reports from Reuters. Witkoff elaborated that he anticipates tangible advancements, particularly concerning a potential ceasefire in the Black Sea between the involved nations, during discussions on Monday.
Witkoff further asserted that a ceasefire in the Black Sea could pave the way for a comprehensive cessation of hostilities. Addressing apprehensions expressed by European Union countries regarding a peace agreement potentially enabling Russian expansion, he remarked, “I just don’t see that he wants to take all of Europe. This is a much different situation than it was in World War II. In World War II, there was no NATO.”
While acknowledging the complexities of the matter, Witkoff underscored the immediate priority: halting the ongoing violence, stating, “to stop the carnage.” He emphasized the importance of dialogue between the parties involved to understand and fulfill their respective needs, ultimately aiming for a peaceful resolution.
In related developments, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukrainian officials will further engage with American representatives in Saudi Arabia on March 24. This meeting, described as a technical team-level assembly, will also involve planned interactions with Russian representatives.
It should be noted that US Special Envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg indicated that American teams would travel to Saudi Arabia for indirect negotiations with both Ukraine and Russia. However, Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi clarified Ukraine’s stance, asserting that the discussions are seen as bilateral with US authorities, with no intention for Ukrainian teams to directly interact with Russian participants during these talks.
In conclusion, the dialogue led by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff aims to foster peace in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. His remarks indicate a belief in Putin’s willingness to negotiate, while also addressing concerns from EU nations regarding potential Russian territorial ambitions. The upcoming meetings in Saudi Arabia signify a concerted effort to halt violence and facilitate a serious discussion towards peace, although the Ukrainian administration anticipates a bilateral engagement with the US only, rather than direct talks with Russia.
