Police Officer Convicted for Soliciting $800 Bribe in Zimbabwe
Constable Peter Loverage Mombe of the Zimbabwe Republic Police was sentenced to 10 months in prison after soliciting an $800 bribe related to the unlawful seizure of a truck. The bribery incident led to a sting operation by the ZRP Internal Investigations Unit, culminating in his arrest at a Harare service station.
A police officer from the Zimbabwe Republic Police, Constable Peter Loverage Mombe, has received a ten-month prison sentence after being convicted of soliciting an $800 bribe. The conviction was handed down at the Harare Magistrates Court, following a full trial on a charge of criminal abuse of duty as a public officer.
The charges stemmed from an incident that occurred on August 2, 2023, at an Engen Service Station in Eastlea, Harare. Constable Mombe approached Francis Nembire, the owner of a truck that had been seized for allegedly transporting lithium ore without a permit, demanding the bribe for the release of the vehicle.
After multiple phone calls requesting payment, Nembire reported the matter to the ZRP Internal Investigations Unit, which initiated a sting operation involving trap money. During the agreed transaction at the service station, police detectives apprehended Mombe, who attempted to escape and disposed of the cash but was caught by law enforcement officials.
The conviction of Constable Peter Loverage Mombe underscores the serious consequences of corruption within law enforcement. His actions illustrate a breach of public trust, and the swift response from the ZRP Internal Investigations Unit highlights the commitment to uphold integrity within the police force.
