Ethiopia Launches 100 Electric Buses in Addis Ababa to Enhance Urban Transport

The Addis Ababa City Administration has launched 100 electric buses to promote electric mobility. Assembled locally with Chinese components, these buses feature advanced technologies and are set to improve public transport with zero emissions. The Ethiopian government aims to boost the number of electric vehicles to 500,000 in the next decade, addressing existing transportation challenges.

In a significant initiative to foster electric mobility, the Addis Ababa City Administration has deployed 100 electric buses in Ethiopia’s capital. This move is aimed at enhancing urban transport and promoting environmentally friendly options in the city.

The electric buses were assembled by Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex, using components sourced from China. Equipped with advanced Intelligent Transportation Systems and Fare Collection Systems, these buses promise to improve commuting experiences for local residents along the new Bus Rapid Transit route.

Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics Alemu Sime highlighted the benefits of the new fleet, stating that the buses are not only eco-friendly with zero emissions but also provide a comfortable ride with ample passenger capacity. He emphasized the use of dedicated bus lanes for quicker travel times.

This deployment is anticipated to address the pressing public transportation challenges faced by Addis Ababa, offering a more efficient and sustainable commuting option. The Ethiopian government has reported over 100,000 electric vehicles on the roads, with plans to increase this figure to 500,000 in the next ten years, significantly reducing reliance on fuel-powered vehicles.

To facilitate this transition to electric mobility, a ban on the import of gasoline and diesel vehicles was imposed by the Ethiopian government last year, coinciding with rising global fuel prices.
