Ethiopia Introduces 100 Electric Buses to Enhance Public Transport in Addis Ababa

Ethiopia has launched 100 electric buses in Addis Ababa, promoting green mobility. These locally assembled buses, equipped with advanced technologies, offer zero emissions and feature dedicated bus lanes for efficient commuter transport. The government aims to expand the electric vehicle fleet significantly while banning gasoline vehicle imports to enhance sustainability.

The Addis Ababa City Administration has launched a fleet of 100 electric buses, enhancing electric mobility in Ethiopia. Assembled locally by Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex and utilizing components from China, these buses feature advanced technologies, including an integrated Intelligent Transportation System and a Fare Collection System. They are already operational along the new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes, serving as a convenient transportation solution for residents.

Equipped to improve public transportation, the buses produce zero emissions and are designed for passenger comfort, as emphasized by Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime. The electric buses will operate on dedicated bus lanes, promoting faster travel and addressing the shortage of public transport in Addis Ababa. The government anticipates this initiative will create a more efficient and sustainable commuting experience for city dwellers.

According to the Ethiopian Ministry of Transport and Logistics, there are currently over 100,000 electric vehicles nationwide, with a goal to increase this number to 500,000 over the next decade. This initiative aims to replace 95% of traditional fuel-powered vehicles with electric options. The Ethiopian government has initiated measures to facilitate this transition, including banning the import of gasoline and diesel vehicles in response to rising global fuel prices.

The introduction of 100 electric buses in Addis Ababa marks a pivotal development in Ethiopia’s shift toward electric mobility. These buses, which are environmentally friendly and equipped with modern technologies, are set to improve public transportation efficiency. With governmental initiatives already in place, including a ban on gasoline vehicle imports, Ethiopia is making significant strides towards a sustainable and expansive electric vehicle future.
