EU Election Observation Mission Deploys Observers for Philippine Midterm Elections

The EU Election Observation Mission has deployed 72 long-term observers in the Philippines for the National Midterm Elections, accompanied by around 100 short-term observers. The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) has deployed 72 long-term observers throughout the Philippines ahead of the National Midterm Elections. These observers received comprehensive briefings in Manila regarding the electoral framework, political context, media landscape, and campaign strategies.

The mission is led by Chief Observer Marta Temido of Portugal, who plans to visit the Philippines soon. Deputy Chief Observer Manuel Sánchez de Nogués emphasized that these observers will operate across various regions, including both urban and rural areas, gathering insights from electoral officials and representatives from civil society and the media during the election process.

An additional contingent of approximately 100 short-term observers, along with a delegation of European Parliament members and accredited diplomats, will join the mission shortly before the elections. In total, over 200 observers from the EU, Canada, Norway, and Switzerland will monitor the electoral activities on 12 May.

Mr. Sánchez de Nogués elaborated that the EU EOM utilizes a well-established methodology for assessing elections, which has been refined over more than two decades. The focus includes the legal framework, election administration, campaign dynamics, media influence, voting processes, and resolution of election-related disputes. The mission is committed to maintaining neutrality and does not interfere in the electoral process.

Following the elections, the EU EOM will release a preliminary statement and remain in the Philippines until the end of May to finalize their observations, culminating in a comprehensive report with recommendations for future elections. In accordance with an invitation from the Philippine Government, the EU EOM has operated independently since its inception on 28 March, adhering to all relevant guidelines while respecting local laws.
