Nnayereugo was returned to Nigeria early on April 19, 2025, after being on the run since July 2023, when he allegedly took the life of the 21-year-old university student.

Originally apprehended in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Nnayereugo escaped custody in November 2023, continuing to evade authorities while using forged identities across various regions. His identity was ultimately confirmed through international cooperation and advanced biometrics.

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun commended the efforts of INTERPOL NCB Abuja in capturing the fugitive and expressed appreciation for the collaborative work of several entities, including the Nigerian Embassy in Qatar, in securing his extradition.
