The massacre began at a gold-mining location where 14 victims were found dead, and further bodies were later discovered inside nearby homes and a mosque in the vicinity. While the exact reason for the attack remains unclear, it is noted that bandit groups historically engage in mass killings and kidnappings, predominantly targeting regions in Nigeria’s conflict-riddled northern areas. The organization stated, “The people of Dan Gulbi district have been repeatedly attacked by gunmen and continue to live perpetually in fear of a potential attack.” This ongoing threat is compounded by the rising trend of kidnappings for ransom, which has proliferated in the region; last December, gunmen abducted at least 50 individuals, including women and children, in a separate episode in the Maradun area.
