Key Suspect Arrested in Kasipul MP Were’s Assassination Case
Isaac Kuria, a key suspect in the assassination of Kasipul MP Charles Were, was arrested near the Kenya-Tanzania border while allegedly attempting to flee. Eleven suspects are now in custody, including the MP’s bodyguard and driver. The investigation reveals a well-orchestrated plot behind the murder, with financial contributions from prominent individuals also under scrutiny.
In a major development regarding the assassination of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, authorities have apprehended a key suspect named Isaac Kuria, also known as “Kush.” The arrest took place in Isebania, a border town near Tanzania, where Kuria was allegedly attempting to flee the country after the daylight shooting that unfolded on Nairobi’s Valley Road.
Kuria’s capture comes after law enforcement has made several related arrests. Among those already detained are Were’s personal bodyguard, Allan Omondi, his driver, Walter Owino, and William Imoli, who is thought to have significantly funded and organized the assassination. Currently, the total number of suspects linked to the case stands at eleven.
Detectives revealed that Kuria is believed to have orchestrated a calculated attack on the MP. They assert he trailed Were through Nairobi’s busy downtown area before ambushing him while stuck in traffic. Following the murder, Kuria reportedly fled to Mihang’o, where he disposed of the murder weapon, a pistol subsequently found by investigators.
Evidence suggests that Kuria continued his escape route through Narok on a motorbike and then took public transport to Isebania, where he allegedly coordinated plans for a cross-border getaway with a relative in Tanzania.
Detectives managed to capture Kuria due to their eavesdropping on his communications with other detainees. “We were monitoring his communications and knew he was trying to leave the country,” stated a source familiar with the operation, emphasizing the crucial role of surveillance in the operation.
Kuria was arrested at a lodging in Isebania along with another individual, who is also in custody. Both suspects have since been transferred to Nairobi and are scheduled for an appearance at the JKIA Law Courts on Monday.
The investigation has extended beyond the initial suspects. Notable figures, including businessman and politician Phillip Aroko along with Lake Basin Development Authority Director Ebel Ochieng, are also under scrutiny for reportedly financing the assassination plot. Other detainees include Edwin Oduor and Dennis Manyasi.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed ongoing efforts to analyze bank transactions and communications amongst the suspects, intending to uncover the full motive behind the murder. Meanwhile, the slain MP was laid to rest at his rural home in Kachien village on Friday, amidst a national outpouring of grief.
The arrest of Isaac Kuria marks a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into the assassination of Kasipul MP Charles Were. With 11 suspects now in custody, including various personal associates of the MP and other notable figures, authorities are intensifying efforts to uncover the motives and orchestrators behind this tragic killing. As the inquiry extends, the DCI continues to analyze evidence to paint a clearer picture of the crime’s orchestration.
