Mozambique Faces Threat from Cyclone Dikeledi: A Multi-Sectoral Rapid Assessment
Mozambique is facing severe impacts from Tropical Storm Dikeledi, which has strengthened into a tropical cyclone, particularly affecting Nampula province. Forecasts indicate the cyclone may regain strength after entering the Mozambique Channel. An estimated 255,310 individuals are at risk, with serious concerns over flooding and infrastructure damage. Schools and health facilities are also under threat, highlighting the urgent need for assistance in affected areas.
Mozambique is currently confronting a significant challenge as Tropical Storm Dikeledi has strengthened into a tropical cyclone while traversing the Nampula province. It is anticipated that the storm will weaken as it moves inland; however, forecasts suggest it may re-enter the warmer waters of the Mozambique Channel near Angoche district on January 14, where it could potentially regain strength before nearing Madagascar.
The provinces of Nampula, Cabo Delgado, and Zambezia are enduring harsh weather conditions, particularly around the landfall zone, with heavy rainfall and destructive winds affecting these regions. Nampula is facing the most severe impacts, with torrential rains and rough sea conditions reported between Ilha de Moçambique and northern Zambezia.
Authorities estimate that approximately 255,310 individuals are at risk in Nampula, with nearly 98,000 residing in high-risk areas who may need urgent assistance according to the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD). Cyclone Dikeledi is predicted to deliver heavy rainfalls up to 200 mm within 24 hours and winds reaching 120 km/h, posing serious flooding risks and potential infrastructural damage.
The storm threatens at least 491 schools and 62 health facilities, raising concerns among local authorities. The National Meteorology Institute (INAM) advises that strong winds and heavy rainfall will affect coastal districts including Mossuril, Angoche, and Mogincual, further exacerbating the region’s vulnerability due to the cyclone’s intensity and associated rainfall.
The arrival of Tropical Storm Dikeledi as a tropical cyclone has highlighted Mozambique’s vulnerability to severe weather. The provinces facing the brunt of this cyclone are particularly at risk due to the combination of heavy rainfall and destructive winds, leading to concerns about infrastructure and public safety. Historical data suggests that cyclones can significantly impact communities in these regions, necessitating timely assessments and disaster management strategies.
Tropical Storm Dikeledi poses a serious threat to Mozambique, particularly in Nampula province, where thousands of individuals are at risk of severe weather impacts. With expectations of heavy rain and damaging winds, authorities are preparing for potential flooding and infrastructural damage. Ongoing monitoring and effective response strategies are crucial in mitigating the storm’s effects on the vulnerable population.
